Brent and Jen are off gallivanting on a well-deserved vacation to Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec, and I’m sure they’re having a lovely time scouring all the toy shops of Ottawa and Montreal.

There’s a whole bunch of Transformer blockies, but not the ones I’m looking for. Ah, and then Fan Expo’s right around the corner, so I’m trying to be good. I hear you not spend money. As you can see, I just have new toys on my table.

Kevin (00:02:05 - 00:02:14): Ooh, he’s very shiny. So Ryan, yes, I think it’s time we talk news, and I think there’s a bit this week.

News Before D23

Ryan (00:02:14 - 00:02:42): There is a bit. So there’s a bit of news, and then there’s a bunch of D23 news. Yes. So staying with Marvel anyway, yep, Marvel and Star Wars will be getting their very first crossover. Uh, it was just announced they’re doing a Star Wars Marvel Hope Assembles, written by Kevin Smith, comic book. Uh, the first issue drops in January of 2027.

Kevin (00:02:42 - 00:02:45): Yeah, I don’t know how I feel about that.

Ryan (00:02:45 - 00:02:47): I don’t know either. I don’t—

Kevin (00:02:47 - 00:03:07): the two of them crossing over just doesn’t make sense to me because, I mean, I mean, there have been so many crossovers in the past, comic book and otherwise. Yeah. But Star Wars is a franchise that’s never crossed over with anything. Yeah, that I could— well, except Phineas and Ferb. Yeah, but yeah, we’ll see.

Ryan (00:03:07 - 00:03:08): We will see.

Kevin (00:03:08 - 00:03:12): Well, yeah, I’m not gonna rush out and buy the issues.

Ryan (00:03:12 - 00:03:18): Oh, I’ll get them because I know you will. I’m at the comic shop anyway. So, but yep, so that’s coming this January.

Kevin (00:03:18 - 00:03:20): Do we have— who’s the artist? We know that?

Ryan (00:03:21 - 00:03:29): Uh, I don’t know. I saw the— they showed cover art, and I don’t know if they announced the interior artist, but I did not, uh, it didn’t stick in my head if they did. Cool.

Kevin (00:03:30 - 00:03:30): All good.

Ryan (00:03:30 - 00:04:13): Um, so there’s been some whispers that, uh, Dave Bautista, who is also— he’s been in a lot of rumors right now. So after the injury to the main actor on God of War, Mm-hmm. He’s being rumored to be looking at being cast to replace him. Oh wow, on that. But now there’s also talk that he’s been cast in an undisclosed Star Wars project. Oh yeah, I heard that last week before D23, and I haven’t heard anything about it coming out of D23, right? But it is an undisclosed Star Wars project, so it could easily just be a voice in a cartoon or a game or something too. You never know.

Kevin (00:04:13 - 00:04:15): Hmm, interesting.

Ryan (00:04:15 - 00:04:20): Uh, and then we got our first full trailer for Violent Night 2.

Kevin (00:04:20 - 00:04:21): Yes, I did see that.

Ryan (00:04:21 - 00:04:26): And in this, we get our first look at Mrs. Claus, played by the one Kristen Bell.

Kevin (00:04:26 - 00:04:29): That’s an inspired choice, I think.

Ryan (00:04:30 - 00:04:56): Uh, Brent, his reaction was, well, as much as I was thinking about seeing this movie beforehand, now he really has to, because we all know of his one of his secret crushes is Kristen Bell. Um, I was planning on seeing this movie and now it’s like, yeah, I will have to see this movie. The trailer looks great. Um, he’s— Santa has started— this Santa has started to lose his magic and it looks like he’s working as a mall Santa or something.

Kevin (00:04:56 - 00:04:56): Yeah.

Ryan (00:04:56 - 00:05:14): Trying to find his Christmas spirit when of course he has to take out the bad guys, which, uh, includes, uh, an AEW wrestler, MJF, uh, who’s is seen a lot in this first trailer. So it looks like he may be— I don’t think he’s the main bad guy, but I can see him being like the main henchman.

Kevin (00:05:14 - 00:05:15): Mm-hmm.

Ryan (00:05:15 - 00:05:26): So he gets quite a bit of screen time. That’s all I had for like non-D23 news. Mm-hmm. But we got a lot of D23 news.

D23: Marvel, Disney, and Pixar

Kevin (00:05:26 - 00:05:34): Yes, we did. How do you want to divide it up? You want to start with movies and Marvel first, or Marvel, Star Wars, other Disney?

Ryan (00:05:35 - 00:05:36): What would you like to do?

Kevin (00:05:36 - 00:05:43): Well, I am on a webpage. I’m looking at a list here now of all the Marvel announcements that were made.

Ryan (00:05:43 - 00:05:44): Okay, let’s start with that.

Kevin (00:05:44 - 00:05:52): So let’s start there. They did release the latest Avengers: Doomsday trailer.

Ryan (00:05:52 - 00:05:53): Yep, looks pretty cool.

Kevin (00:05:53 - 00:05:54): Which does look pretty cool.

Ryan (00:05:54 - 00:06:15): This one was the one they showed at San Diego that people— there was an 8-minute got the— grabbed the audio from because they recorded it while they’re in this thing and then did like an AI version. Because I saw one with this audio and I was like watching it, I’m like, this looks AI. And it was— it was not this trailer.

Kevin (00:06:15 - 00:06:32): Um, they— there, there are— there’s speculation now that, that Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom may not be the actual Doctor Doom, or he may be more Iron Man-y than we think.

Ryan (00:06:32 - 00:06:32): Okay.

Kevin (00:06:33 - 00:06:34): I don’t know.

Ryan (00:06:34 - 00:07:08): I saw some people that have been dissecting this trailer where they’re like, the scene where it looks like Doom comes bursting out a window and does like a superhero landing, it— if you look at, apparently the scenes don’t necessarily match up. Hmm. It looks like he’s, you know, the way he’s falling, you know, coming out of this window, looks like he’s been thrown or punched or hit out of this window. And then when you see him standing on the ground, his— there’s parts of his costume that are a bit disheveled and broken. So it might be— he might be getting beat up a little bit, as invincible as he has appeared.

Kevin (00:07:08 - 00:07:22): Mm-hmm. We did get word too, it’s not in the trailer, but there was a video shown at D23 of Hugh Jackman. Yes, they’re pretty much confirming that Wolverine is in Avengers: Doomsday.

Ryan (00:07:22 - 00:07:49): Is he? Because the video I saw was him on screen kind of being forced by Ryan Reynolds was off-screen because you hear his voice, and it’s kind of like him saying, oh, hello, you know, I’m available if you need me to help fill out the roster of— and he’s like, oh my— and every time he’s just like, really, this is what you want? He’s like, say the lines, Jackman. He’s like, okay. And he’s like, just— I think I can convince Ryan to join in too.

Kevin (00:07:49 - 00:07:53): So we may see Wolverine in Deadpool.

Ryan (00:07:53 - 00:08:08): I think the way that they keep playing up that these guys are available. Oh, we’re not in it. What do you mean? The movie’s done editing. It’s like that there’s gonna be like some surprise show-up of them in it. Maybe not a lot. Yeah, but they all of a sudden they’ll just— they’ll show up or like—

Kevin (00:08:09 - 00:08:09): yeah, yeah.

Ryan (00:08:09 - 00:08:16): They, they announced the cast of X-Men and confirmed a date for X-Men.

Kevin (00:08:17 - 00:08:48): And they did. May 5th, 2028, X-Men will be in theaters. So we’ve got Kit Connor as Scott Summers, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Indi Navarrete as Rogue, and Maia Boyd as Storm. Those are your X-Men, along with Sadie Sink as Jean Grey. And of course Sadie Sink. And then the— via video, it was announced and confirmed that Adam Driver is in the film and he will be playing Mr. Sinister.

Ryan (00:08:48 - 00:08:53): Yeah, so they finally got their hooks into Adam Driver and found a spot to get him into the MCU.

Kevin (00:08:53 - 00:08:55): I think that’s a good place for him.

Ryan (00:08:55 - 00:09:02): Oh, I think he’ll do— that’s a good role for, like, even just visually, like, face and, like, the way he looks. I can picture him as Mr. Sinister.

Kevin (00:09:02 - 00:09:09): Totally works, yeah. We also got a trailer and release date for Vision Quest.

Ryan (00:09:09 - 00:09:09): Yes.

Kevin (00:09:09 - 00:09:37): They’re calling it the 3rd in the WandaVision trilogy. It looks really good. James Spader looks crazy as Ultron. like a human version of Ultron. There’s no word that Bettany is in Avengers, right? Like Paul Bettany, Vision, is in the Avengers movie? Uh, I don’t know. Yeah, because Vision is a great character and I’d hate to see him sidelined.

Ryan (00:09:37 - 00:09:47): It was interesting to see the actor who played Jarvis in the Peggy Carter series. He’s in this as Jarvis.

Kevin (00:09:48 - 00:09:49): In Vision Quest or in—

Ryan (00:09:49 - 00:10:13): yeah, okay, Vision Quest. Yeah, you see this when there’s a sequence when there’s a few of them, of the different people inside his head, they’re right standing around or sitting around and they mentioned something about he’s too dangerous, he shouldn’t be here. I assume they’re talking about Ultron, but it’s like, yeah, it’s the guy who was Jarvis. So it’s like, you know, which makes sense because Vision is, you know, those are his fathers, Jarvis and Ultron, right?

Kevin (00:10:13 - 00:10:23): That’s true. Yeah. Cool. Um, so I’m looking forward to that. Oh, I— going back to Avengers: Doomday for a second, we did also get confirmed that, um, Peggy Carter’s in the film as well.

Ryan (00:10:24 - 00:10:24): Yes.

Kevin (00:10:25 - 00:10:26): So that’s good.

Ryan (00:10:26 - 00:10:48): Yeah, she’s great. Now it’ll be interesting to see, is, is it like, do we get like, like Captain America type or Captain Britain Peggy Carter? Oh, like from like all the multiverse cartoon stuff, right? I think— or is it just gonna be straight up Peggy Carter’s wife, Peggy Carter? His wife, which one is she now? That’s a good question. Who knows what timelines and all that stuff, right? Which Steve is this?

Kevin (00:10:48 - 00:10:51): Yeah, lots of questions. Lots of questions.

Ryan (00:10:51 - 00:10:52): Fun times ahead.

Kevin (00:10:52 - 00:11:28): So other Marvel things, let’s just go through some other Marvel things they’ve announced. The Marvel Wolverine game for PlayStation 5 is coming out September 15th. It’s made by the same people who made the Spider-Man games. Insomniac, right? It does look very cool. They had a panel celebrating 65 years of Spider-Man, which was pretty fun. Marvel had a cool booth. So yeah, lots of Marvel stuff going on at D23, including some theme park stuff, which we’ll get to when we talk theme park stuff. Other— should we move on to other film stuff?

Ryan (00:11:28 - 00:11:49): Sure. I’ll start at the top of my list. We got a glimpse at the new mysterious villain Incredibles 3 in a nice little fun video. You start to see this like silhouette with these glowing eyes and glowing thing on his chest or whatever, and they’re talking about this all-powerful villain who’s stronger than the whole family. And then what’s her name?

Kevin (00:11:49 - 00:11:50): Violet?

Ryan (00:11:51 - 00:11:53): Helen? Yeah, the one that does the costumes.

Kevin (00:11:53 - 00:11:54): Oh, Edna.

Ryan (00:11:54 - 00:12:10): Edna. Then Edna shows up with her big face on the screen, like telling the guy who’s talking to like to be quiet and that he’s giving away too much, that he’s— as she put it, describing a present before it’s been opened. So that’s coming our way sometime soon.

Kevin (00:12:10 - 00:12:17): Invisibles 3— let me see, Invisibles— Incredibles. Incredibles 3, summer 2028.

Ryan (00:12:17 - 00:12:26): Yeah, we got our first look, or actually the first actual trailer for season 3 of Percy Jackson, which is coming our way this fall.

Kevin (00:12:26 - 00:12:32): Yes, and it’s the first time these— book 3 has been adapted. There were 2 Percy Jackson movies, which are the first 2 books.

Ryan (00:12:32 - 00:12:33): We’re into new territory.

Kevin (00:12:33 - 00:12:40): Yeah, I really enjoy the Percy Jackson show. I think it’s really fun. I know it’s for teens, but I think it’s— I just think it’s cool.

Ryan (00:12:40 - 00:12:51): I like it. Um, we had our first look at Frozen 3. Yes, with a whole bunch of stuff. They had a clip where we see there’s a wedding.

Kevin (00:12:52 - 00:12:52): Mm-hmm.

Ryan (00:12:52 - 00:12:58): Yes, there’s a new villain. Yes. Um, we see Olaf the clown— the clown—

Kevin (00:12:58 - 00:12:59): the snowman.

Ryan (00:12:59 - 00:13:06): The snowman. He’s not a clown. has caught the bouquet and is expecting to get— he’s gonna marry the next woman he sees.

Kevin (00:13:06 - 00:13:07): And we see her.

Ryan (00:13:07 - 00:13:13): And then he’s like, I’m gonna wed the next, next woman, because the first one he sees is the villain.

Kevin (00:13:13 - 00:13:19): Ah, but we did— they did introduce us to Olaf’s love interest. I think her name is Samantha.

Ryan (00:13:19 - 00:13:28): Yes, because Josh Gad came out and sang whatever the new song for this movie. Of course, it’ll be a good— it’ll be a hit with the kids. Yeah, it’ll be a good time.

Kevin (00:13:28 - 00:13:30): Yeah, the Frozen movies are fun.

Ryan (00:13:30 - 00:13:30): Oh yeah.

Kevin (00:13:30 - 00:13:35): What else do you want?

Ryan (00:13:35 - 00:13:36): But we’ll hold off on Star Wars.

Kevin (00:13:36 - 00:13:54): Okay, let’s stick with Disney Animation. The new movie Hex comes out this fall. It stars Walton Goggins, Hailee Steinfeld, and Jodie Foster. It looks like it’s gonna be fun. They’ve already released a trailer for that. It will be paired with a new Lilo and Stitch short.

Ryan (00:13:54 - 00:14:01): Okay, because they also announced a new Lilo and Stitch movie. Yes, but that’s another 2028 or 2029.

Kevin (00:14:02 - 00:14:08): Um, next summer we will get the Bluey movie, so all you parents who, who can’t get enough of Bluey.

Ryan (00:14:08 - 00:14:15): And I totally didn’t realize Ice Age is under the Disney umbrella now because Disney bought Fox, which owned the studio that owned—

Kevin (00:14:16 - 00:14:17): that made Ice Age. So yeah, we’re—

Ryan (00:14:17 - 00:14:21): so that we’re getting a new, uh, Ice Age: Boiling Point next February.

Kevin (00:14:23 - 00:14:24): Zootopia 3 is coming.

Ryan (00:14:24 - 00:14:26): I have still never seen any of those.

Kevin (00:14:26 - 00:14:36): I gotta watch Zootopia 2. The first Zootopia was super fun. The other Disney animation film coming out is Clay. Yeah, I haven’t—

Ryan (00:14:36 - 00:14:37): with Macaulay Culkin.

Kevin (00:14:37 - 00:14:52): Yeah, it’s set in a magical forest full of fantastical creatures. That’s all I really know about it. Yeah, so then we got Coco 2 in the Pixar, that’s coming out November 2029.

Ryan (00:14:52 - 00:15:07): Oh, there’s that other new Pixar movie, Ghost Market. Yeah, it was a fun little trailer of a guy, like, let’s say he’s talking to his phone, like, talking like, you know, and then he’s being chased by a haunted bowl of ramen.

Kevin (00:15:07 - 00:15:26): Yes, it looks creepy. There, the live-action Tangled movie, they showed some clips from that. Yes, the nice thing that they announced, the cool thing that they announced is what I think is really brilliant casting. I don’t know if you’ve seen Tangled, but the villain Mother Gothel is being played by Kathryn Hahn, who was Agatha.

Ryan (00:15:26 - 00:15:43): Well, when I saw the clip start, I’m like— and it was one of those ones shot from the, from the crowd point of view— I’m like, what the hell is this? That, that looks like Agatha. What the hell is this? And it’s like, oh, it’s Tangled. Oh, okay, so it’s not another— not Marvel. But no, but it works for her.

Kevin (00:15:43 - 00:16:01): I heard there was some fan, like, the fans were saying, if you’re— if you’re— if you can’t cast the original actress who played her in the movie, in the animated movie, then substitution, Kathryn Hahn is who we get. Uh, the other, uh, big, um, sequel that they’ve announced is Princess Diaries 3. Uh, so that is also coming.

Ryan (00:16:01 - 00:16:18): Yeah, that started off the whole presentation, didn’t it? Anne Hathaway came out and talked about that. She’s been asked about that for like a lot over the years. Um, well, the other— the unexpected sequel is they showed off some working footage from, as they’re calling it, the new Simpsons movie.

Kevin (00:16:18 - 00:16:20): Oh yes, The Simpsons movie.

Ryan (00:16:20 - 00:16:25): Homer and everybody trying to chase a record baseball and crystals.

Kevin (00:16:25 - 00:16:29): Yeah, that’s fun too. Um, also, let’s see here.

Ryan (00:16:29 - 00:16:33): Oh yeah, also a sequel not on my bingo card, Romy and Michele 2.

Kevin (00:16:33 - 00:16:44): Oh yes, did you see them? They were at the presentation. They said, we must be Disney princesses now. Romy and Michele 2. That’s because that’s been over 20 years since that movie came out, right?

Ryan (00:16:44 - 00:16:51): I might be over— might be pushing in closer to 30. I feel like that was a late ’90s movie.

Kevin (00:16:51 - 00:17:06): Yeah, yeah, we’re getting there. And we got it. If we’re gonna make a sequel, we got to do it now. Yeah. Oh, the other Pixar movie that looks kind of cool is Gato, which is about a cat that lives in Venice.

Ryan (00:17:06 - 00:17:09): Okay, I saw the name and I didn’t see it.

Kevin (00:17:10 - 00:17:21): Yeah, so I like that we’re getting A nice mix of sequels and new stuff, especially from Pixar. I think Pixar also announced Monsters Incorporated 3.

Ryan (00:17:21 - 00:17:23): Okay, I didn’t see anything about that.

Kevin (00:17:23 - 00:17:27): Yeah, that one’s kind of under the radar, but I think they’re working on that.

Ryan (00:17:27 - 00:17:33): What are your thoughts about the new Oswald 3-part miniseries?

Kevin (00:17:33 - 00:18:06): I think if— so several, many years ago, Disney traded a sports broadcaster for the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit back, which was the one which was a character that Walt Disney created before Mickey Mouse in the early 1920s. And he was making those cartoons and they were being— they were owned and released by Universal. So about 20 years ago, Disney reacquired the rights to Oswald, and I always wondered what they were gonna do with it. And I think it’ll be fun. It looks like it’s a live-action animated mix.

Ryan (00:18:06 - 00:18:11): I’m pretty sure— oh, what’s his name— was the director— was on stage.

Kevin (00:18:11 - 00:18:12): Jon Favreau.

Ryan (00:18:12 - 00:18:22): Favreau said— he mentioned He’s like made a comment about everybody being happy or excited that it was done in all, all 2D traditional animation.

Kevin (00:18:22 - 00:18:40): Yeah. Yeah, that’s awesome. I think, well, it should be, right? If you’ve— I don’t know if you’ve ever seen an Oswald cartoon, but they’re very flat and very black and white. And yeah, so we got to update that too. The other miniseries that got announced that I think is cool is Kingdom Hearts.

Ryan (00:18:40 - 00:18:47): Yes. Uh, they announced a new level or a new part, a section for the game. Yeah, Coco section in Kingdom Hearts 4.

Kevin (00:18:47 - 00:18:47): Yep.

Ryan (00:18:47 - 00:18:54): And the fact that they just all of a sudden said, oh, and coming soon— they said soon, no date, but soon.

Kevin (00:18:54 - 00:18:54): Yep.

Ryan (00:18:55 - 00:19:00): An animated series based on Kingdom Hearts.

Kevin (00:19:00 - 00:19:00): Yep.

Ryan (00:19:00 - 00:19:04): Which I’ve never played those games, but I will watch the hell out of it. Yeah, series.

Kevin (00:19:06 - 00:19:10): Uh, so yeah, I’m looking forward to that. Let’s stick with TV for a little bit.

Ryan (00:19:10 - 00:19:11): Sure.

Kevin (00:19:11 - 00:19:17): They announced that season 2 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will premiere in January.

Ryan (00:19:17 - 00:19:23): Yes, I saw the— once again, thanks to somebody recording from the audience, I saw the little clip.

Kevin (00:19:23 - 00:19:25): Yeah, they showed off Venom, apparently.

Ryan (00:19:25 - 00:19:29): Well, at least the black suit. So he gets all of the— yeah.

Kevin (00:19:29 - 00:20:00): Scrubs season 2 of the reboot is back in September. The kids’ show Spidey and His Amazing Friends has been renewed for a 7th season. And oh, the one that they announced at the— the show they announced at the Experiences panel last night was a season 2 of The Imagineering Story. So the first season came out when Disney+ launched in 2019.

Ryan (00:20:00 - 00:20:02): Yeah, that was like one of those behind-the-scenes type stories.

Kevin (00:20:02 - 00:20:08): Yeah, it’s all about— yeah, so there’s been a lot of new things built in parks since 2019. And so that’s what this will be about.

Ryan (00:20:08 - 00:20:09): Awesome.

Kevin (00:20:11 - 00:20:27): They also announced a big new musical stage show that will be opening in London in the spring, and they have turned the movie The Greatest Showman into a big Broadway-style spectacular. So that’s gonna open.

Ryan (00:20:27 - 00:20:36): Okay, so that’s what that was. I saw that clip of things, but I didn’t realize— I thought maybe it was just a performance on the, you know, I didn’t realize that it wasn’t already a stage show.

Kevin (00:20:36 - 00:20:40): Yeah, you’d think, but no, this is a movie musical being turned into a stage show.

Ryan (00:20:40 - 00:20:49): I always assumed that that one was Well, you know, that it had been a, you know, a stage show then made into a movie, not that it’s going the opposite way.

Kevin (00:20:49 - 00:20:52): Yeah. Yeah. Do you want to talk Star Wars now?

D23: Star Wars

Ryan (00:21:27 - 00:21:36): Yeah, the Rebels, the other droids. There’s— we get flashbacks. There’s a whole new flashback sequence with young Anakin. Yes. Ahsoka.

Kevin (00:21:37 - 00:21:37): Yeah.

Ryan (00:21:37 - 00:21:54): And some other Dark Jedi or something, some guy with lightsabers. It looks awesome. There was lots of talk about Anakin’s outfit because it’s like this new costume. It’s like, you know, like a snowy winter jacket type look. And like, I kind of want that as my winter jacket.

Kevin (00:21:54 - 00:21:58): Oh, don’t worry, it’ll be available.

Ryan (00:21:58 - 00:22:35): Yeah, that— so we got— so I don’t know, I shared it, and then— but it’s not online anymore, so I don’t know if you had a chance to look at it. So they showed footage, they had a trailer for Star Wars Starfighter, and it looks good. Yeah, it looks good. Yeah. Now, well, and Ryan Gosling, he sounds and looks good in Star Wars. Mm-hmm. He— they brought him out, they did a whole thing where they showed a montage of clips of of him in his Mickey Mouse Club days.

Kevin (00:22:35 - 00:22:35): Mm-hmm.

Ryan (00:22:35 - 00:23:07): And he came out in a Mickey Mouse Club jacket, and then they took that jacket off and had a Star Wars jacket for him that had his character’s like logo, like a new logo on it, which when you look at it, what’s that? It kind of looks like a pirate logo, but it’s the Rebel symbol turned upside down with a pair of blasters underneath it crossed, like so, like a skull and bones. It’s like Oh man, that’s a cool jacket. I can’t wait. And, you know, I was like, how fast are we gonna see cosplayers wearing that? Yeah, because that’s a pretty easy thing to reproduce.

Kevin (00:23:07 - 00:23:10): Yeah, yeah, no, it looks pretty good.

Ryan (00:23:10 - 00:23:52): Yeah, it, it looks good. It sounds like, from the little bits you can pick up in the— of the story and what they’ve talked about the story ahead of time, where it sounds like his nephew, which is the younger character that we see in the photos with him, is going to possibly be Force sensitive and get sent to, to for some reason is sent to him to live with or be taken care of for a while. He’s got some prototype starfighter, which is where the starfighter, I guess, part comes from, that’s hidden away in their little, uh, garage. My guess is the bad guys get a hold of the kid, he’s gonna have to like, you know, go to— you know, he’s probably— maybe he’s Force sensitive. Ryan Gosling as a Jedi is an action figure I would purchase.

Kevin (00:23:52 - 00:23:53): Mm-hmm.

Ryan (00:23:54 - 00:24:14): And we need more Jedi in this new Expanded Universe, right? Rey needs people to go to her school. Yep. So, you know, yeah, I don’t want to get too excited for this movie, but I’m— I have good feelings for this. It’s, it’s good. It has a chance to be a really good addition to the Star Wars universe.

Kevin (00:24:14 - 00:24:17): And it comes out in May of 2027.

Ryan (00:24:17 - 00:24:18): Yeah, next year.

Kevin (00:24:18 - 00:24:23): Next May is gonna be busy because aren’t they also releasing, re-releasing Original Star Wars?

Ryan (00:24:23 - 00:24:55): Original Star Wars is re-releasing in February. Oh, February. That’s because I guess that was the original— I feel like that might have been the original release, was a February release, not May. But May’s been the thing. But yes, the original Star Wars— we think we talked about this on a past episode— original Star Wars updated version, remastered, like cleaned up and everything. But it’s the original cut. Mm-hmm. Yeah, it’s gonna get a theatrical run in February. Mm-hmm. So we’ll see that.

Kevin (00:24:56 - 00:25:07): Yeah, there were a couple things that I thought would be talked about, movies and TV-wise, that didn’t. Okay. Avatar 4 and 5. There was no word—

D23: Disney Parks and Experiences

Kevin (00:25:26 - 00:25:58): Okay, I’ll go through quick because I know not everybody is as huge a theme park fan as I am. There was a lot of stuff for Walt Disney World, but you know, again, these are— a lot of this is just expansion on what we’ve already been told, right? So the Carousel of Progress is an attraction where you go through the history of progress, and it was sponsored by General Electric. It used to start around the turn of the century, and then it took us to the wild future of 1993. So it’s being updated. So now the first scene is gonna be in the 1960s.

Ryan (00:25:58 - 00:25:59): Okay.

Kevin (00:25:59 - 00:26:19): And it will go up to present day and beyond. They showed off the 1980s scene, and they also announced who the voice actors will be who are taking over the roles in the animatronics in the attraction. So The mother will be played now by Jamie Lee Curtis.

Ryan (00:26:19 - 00:26:20): Okay.

Kevin (00:26:20 - 00:26:22): And the father by Bryan Cranston.

Ryan (00:26:22 - 00:26:23): Okay.

Kevin (00:26:23 - 00:26:36): So, and that’s gonna open this spring. There is a great ride at Animal Kingdom called Expedition Everest where you race through a mountain on a roller coaster and at the end a giant Yeti attacks you.

Ryan (00:26:36 - 00:26:37): As they do.

Kevin (00:26:37 - 00:26:39): A 20-foot-tall animatronic Yeti.

Ryan (00:26:39 - 00:26:39): Oh wow.

Kevin (00:26:39 - 00:26:46): But it has been broken since 2006. It’s been in disc— we call it disco mode. They just flash strobe lights on it so it looks like it’s moving.

Ryan (00:26:46 - 00:26:46): Yeah.

Kevin (00:26:48 - 00:27:01): They did a whole disco number at the D23 panel last night. They had Gloria Gaynor come out and sing I Will Survive just to announce that disco mode is going away and they are fixing the Yeti after 20 years.

Ryan (00:27:01 - 00:27:02): Nice.

Kevin (00:27:02 - 00:27:38): Spaceship Earth, which is the big globe ride that you see at the front of Epcot, it is getting a major refurb. The focus is going to be from— so the ride’s always been about the history of communication. It’s now going to be about the history of community and connection, human connection. So the Figment ride, the Journey Into Imagination, Dreamfinder is coming back. They’re re— who was a character that was in the park when it first opened. That ride has— yeah, that ride has kind of sucked for the last 20 years. It is going to be redone. But again, we had no details on that.

Ryan (00:27:38 - 00:27:39): And they’re bringing Figment back.

Kevin (00:27:39 - 00:27:47): Figment is in the ride now, but Dreamfinder is coming back, which is the cool thing. Yeah, Neil Patrick Harris was dressed up as Dreamfinder by the end of the panel. Oh, was that him? I didn’t even realize.

Ryan (00:27:49 - 00:27:49): I didn’t realize that was him.

Kevin (00:27:49 - 00:28:12): Yeah, because he was the host of the panel. And so, yeah, he was, he was the Dreamfinder at the end. Okay. Tropical Americas is the new land at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It’s replacing Dinoland. For the first time ever in a Disney attraction, Harrison Ford will actually be the face of the Indiana Jones animatronic in the new ride Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent.

Ryan (00:28:12 - 00:28:13): I saw that clip.

Kevin (00:28:13 - 00:28:16): Yeah. So there’s been Indiana Jones rides already.

Ryan (00:28:16 - 00:28:17): They never looked like Harrison Ford.

Kevin (00:28:17 - 00:28:46): He never gave permission to use his likeness. You always sort of rush past them quickly, or he’s facing away from you. Now he will look like it. This ride, because it’s in Animal Kingdom, the ride will be— you will— you’ll be taken up through a hidden passage that leads to the Mayan underworld, which is guarded by a mythical giant serpent. So there will be giant scorpions and bats and lots of snakes. So there’s your animal connection to Animal Kingdom.

Ryan (00:28:46 - 00:28:57): Oh yeah, I can see why, you know, especially like you think of the, like, Temple of Doom. Yeah, right, that kind of era of Indiana Jones. Yeah, totally fits having Indiana Jones ride in.

Kevin (00:28:57 - 00:29:10): Right, and this ride is really just a refreshing of the ride that was already there, which was Dinosaur, which was already an exact copy of the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland. They just had different theming. Yeah, so basically we’re taking—

Ryan (00:29:10 - 00:29:11): updated the refresh.

Kevin (00:29:11 - 00:29:57): Yeah, and we’re taking all the giant dinosaurs out and replacing them with giant snakes. So it’ll still be fun. And the building will go from looking like a natural history museum with bones of dinosaurs to a Mayan temple, which should look really cool. Also in the Tropical Americas land is a ride called El Carrusel de los Animalitos, which is just a merry-go-round, but they’re hand-carving animals that are inspired by Disney and Pixar stories. So you will be able to ride around on your carousel on characters like Scuttle or Squirt or Pua or Pascal or Simba. It looks very cute, and I’m sure they will have— though there are 22 hand-carved animals, so I’m sure there will be 22 stuffed animals you can buy as well.

Ryan (00:29:57 - 00:29:58): Oh, I’m sure there will be.

Kevin (00:29:58 - 00:30:28): The big attraction though, besides Indiana Jones going into Tropical Americas land, is Antonio’s Fiesta de Encanto, which is— have you seen the movie Encanto, the Disney animated film Encanto with the magical family? No, I have not. So it’s about a magical family. They live in South America, and every member of the family gets magical gift when they turn 12 or something. And they live in this magical house called the Casita, and the house can rearrange itself. And so that’s what happens in this ride.

Ryan (00:30:28 - 00:30:32): Did we mention, going back, that they teased a Coco 2?

Kevin (00:30:32 - 00:30:47): I think we briefly touched on it. Yes, sorry, I saw the musical part made me think of it. I saw an image of the, the Miguel, and he’s grown up.

Ryan (00:30:47 - 00:30:50): He’s like a teenager now. Yeah, so it’s more like a 20-something.

Kevin (00:30:50 - 00:31:45): So the Encanto ride looks very cool. Like I said, the house is magic and it can transform itself, so the ride vehicles just look like things that were in the house. Like you could be riding in the piano or the dining room table. It’s very, it’s very fun looking. And the whole Tropical Americas land at Animal Kingdom should open next year, 2027. Things that they haven’t announced opening dates for, there is the new Cars Land at Magic Kingdom, Piston Peak National Park, a Cars Land. The feature attraction is going to be called Ridge Run Rally, where each car competes for the fastest lap in the West Climb up the mountain. And they’ll be— it just looks really cool. I’m not sure what kind of ride attraction like it is. It’s some kind of fast-moving— I have a feeling it might be Test Track-like.

Ryan (00:31:45 - 00:31:46): Yeah.

Kevin (00:31:46 - 00:32:17): Could be kind of fun. The other ride is called Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin Along. It is some kind of demolition derby spinner ride. The— now the next land that is opening next year, Monstropolis at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. There is a new show called Welcome to Monstropolis in the Glob theater. They, they had Megan Hilty come out and sing the opening song from this new show, which is the first time Randy Newman has ever written a song for a Disney theme park.

Ryan (00:32:17 - 00:32:17): Oh nice.

Kevin (00:32:17 - 00:32:52): Which is kind of cool. There will be the Harryhausen’s restaurant, just like in the first movie, which will have an audio-animatronic octopus chef making sushi. The Door Coaster is the big attraction. It’s on the scare floor of Monsters, Inc. And all we learned from it is that when you get on the ride, you get on the ride, the cars hang under the seat— under the track, I mean. And as soon as you get on, you will be hoisted 40 feet into the air in 4 seconds.

Ryan (00:32:52 - 00:32:53): Oh, wow.

Kevin (00:32:53 - 00:33:02): And the coaster is not going to open with the land. The land is going to open in the spring. spring, I think, and the coaster will open as soon as it’s done.

Ryan (00:33:02 - 00:33:02): Okay.

Kevin (00:33:02 - 00:33:32): Villains Land is the other big land that’s opening at Magic Kingdom. We don’t know— it’s gonna open after Cars. It is officially called Villains Land. We were waiting to hear what it was gonna be called, but they said, you know, it fits with all the other lands at the park: Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Adventureland, Villains Land. The 2 rides that are announced for this are a roller coaster that’s Maleficent-themed.

Ryan (00:33:32 - 00:33:33): Makes sense.

Kevin (00:33:33 - 00:33:43): And a— it looks like a boat ride, and it is called the Mirror Realm, and it’s hosted by Snow White’s magic mirror. And all the villains will come out and attack you.

Ryan (00:33:43 - 00:33:49): Okay, you would think that if it’s a boat, you’re missing the boat if you don’t have it be Ursula.

Kevin (00:33:50 - 00:33:54): Yeah, with water. But yeah, no, it’s—

Ryan (00:33:54 - 00:33:55): I can see her being part of it.

Kevin (00:33:55 - 00:34:47): In the concept art, she’s in the picture. Scar, Dr. Facilier, Jafar, Cruella de Vil. They also had, at the end of the Villains Land panel, they had Glenn Close come out as Cruella de Vil. Remember, she played Cruella in the old live-action 101 Dalmatians from the ’90s. And it almost sounded like she was announcing Cruella ride, but nothing ever was said about it after, so it was kind of weird. At Disneyland, the big thing is Avengers Campus expansion. We’re getting Avengers: Infinity Defense. It will have giant physical sets. You’re gonna be welcomed into the attraction by Ms. Marvel, as played by Iman Vellani. Your mission is to reassemble the Avengers to defeat King Thanos. Jeremy Renner will be in the attraction. Anthony Mackie, Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man will be in the film. the ride.

Ryan (00:34:47 - 00:34:48): Okay.

Kevin (00:34:48 - 00:34:56): Stark Flight Lab is, is a ride where you are testing out like rocket pack kind of things.

Ryan (00:34:56 - 00:34:56): Makes sense.

Kevin (00:34:56 - 00:35:46): Fly around. And again, it will have appearances from Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Mackie, and Brie Larson as Captain Marvel. The other big ride out west is Coco. A Coco ride is being built at California Adventure. It will be a family-friendly attraction with no height requirement, and it will take place a year after the original film. And you will— it’s a boat ride where you travel into the Land of the Dead. It looks very cool. They also briefly announced at the very end of the panel that Tomorrowland at Disneyland is getting a major transformation. Nothing was said about what exactly that means except that it’s 4 years until Disneyland’s 75th anniversary, so it needs a refresh.

Ryan (00:35:46 - 00:35:47): Yeah.

Kevin (00:35:47 - 00:36:14): Also new ships for the Disney Cruise Line. Then there were also some things for the foreign parks. Space Mountain at Disneyland Paris, which is currently a Star Wars-themed ride, it’s called Hyperspace Mountain. It is getting the Star Wars elements taken out and it’s being replaced. It’s going back to what the original version of the ride was, which was a Jules Verne-themed trip to the moon on a rocket.

Ryan (00:36:14 - 00:36:14): It’s—

Kevin (00:36:14 - 00:36:25): I rode it 20 years ago. I loved that version. I’ve actually ridden every version of Space Mountain at Disneyland Paris, and the original was my favorite. I’m glad it’s going on— it’s going back to that.

Kevin (00:36:25 - 00:36:59): The Space Mountain at Tokyo Disneyland is being reopened with a new, a new theme. We’re getting a Lion King themed land at Disneyland Paris with a Lion King log flume ride where it ends with, with Scar’s fall off the cliff, I think. Okay, but, uh, but, uh, but, uh, but, uh, there’s the Spider-Man roller coaster at Shanghai Disneyland. They’re getting a whole Spider-Man land at Shanghai Disneyland. Yep, we’re getting, we’re getting—

Ryan (00:36:59 - 00:37:04): Hong Kong is getting an Avengers drop tower, Avengers Tower drop ride.

Kevin (00:37:06 - 00:37:25): Yeah, so all the parks are getting a lot of new stuff. They are getting a lot of new stuff. Well, you know, competition is good, right? And with Universal down the road just opening the Epic Universe Park, you know, amazing things have to happen at Disney for people to keep coming back.

My Adventures with Superman Finale

Ryan (00:37:45 - 00:37:59): So we’ll continue on this little adventure with, uh, so since our cohorts aren’t here and they aren’t up to date on one of our favorite shows, uh, Kevin and I just watched the finale for My Adventures with Superman.

Kevin (00:37:59 - 00:38:00): What a good show that is.

Ryan (00:38:00 - 00:38:05): So good. It’s, it’s a love letter to Superman.

Kevin (00:38:05 - 00:38:08): Yeah, it really is, in an anime style.

Ryan (00:38:08 - 00:38:21): Yeah, it has just enough anime, like, stylized to the characters and some of the reactions they do and things, but not full-blown crazy anime.

Kevin (00:38:21 - 00:38:21): Yes.

Ryan (00:38:21 - 00:38:32): There’s still enough traditional, like, North American animation style to it. and storytelling, but it’s a— we had 4 seasons so far. We think this might be—

Kevin (00:38:32 - 00:38:32): 3.

Kevin (00:38:32 - 00:38:33): It’s only been 3 seasons.

Kevin (00:38:37 - 00:39:00): Yeah. You know, it’s not— there are enough changes to it that it feels new and modern. Yes, they’ve changed the backgrounds of some of the characters. Jimmy Olsen is not a white redheaded kid anymore, and Lois Lane is Asian in this version, but that’s That doesn’t matter though. I think—

Ryan (00:39:00 - 00:39:03): I think I wouldn’t necessarily even say that. Yeah, because I thought they had—

Kevin (00:39:03 - 00:39:04): I thought they had—

Ryan (00:39:04 - 00:39:07): I don’t know, they haven’t shown her mother. Her father’s clearly not Asian.

Kevin (00:39:07 - 00:39:25): But anyway, she’s played by an Asian actress, the voice of Lois. And but they’re doing— you know, there was an episode this season called The Death of Superman, and we all know what that means, and we all know the story that it came from in the ’90s, and that’s what we were all expecting, and that’s not what we got. And it was so fun and exciting to see something fresh.

Ryan (00:39:26 - 00:39:27): We had a lot of time travel in this season.

Kevin (00:39:27 - 00:39:28): A lot of time travel.

Ryan (00:39:28 - 00:39:37): With different versions of Jonathan Kent coming from the future to try to, you know, come from the future into the past to save the future.

Kevin (00:39:37 - 00:39:46): I think my favorite storyline this season was Jimmy trying to let Kara play the field and have relationships.

Ryan (00:39:46 - 00:39:48): Oh yes, so then he feels he has to go out and date.

Kevin (00:39:48 - 00:39:55): And he ends up with this, in this dating service that keeps transforming him into werewolves or turtles or so many—

Ryan (00:39:55 - 00:39:58): Dating so many like future possible supervillainess.

Kevin (00:39:58 - 00:40:19): Yes, yes. And there were a lot of that stuff was homages to like Silver Age Jimmy Olsen stories. So, so fun. I just read on Wikipedia that it seems like this is the last season, that, that James Gunn has asked— even though he liked the show, he asked the producers to sort of tie up storylines that they were planning for season 4 in season 3.

Ryan (00:40:19 - 00:40:51): So now with the new addition soon of My Adventures with Green Lantern. So maybe that’s gonna be the way they do this, is it’s you get a few seasons of this, like of Superman, and then now Green Lantern will replace it with hopefully some appearances from characters from Superman, depending on how, like, where this Green Lantern show is based. And then maybe that’s their plan, is they’ll, you know, take 3 years of one character, 3 years of another character, 3 years of—

Kevin (00:40:51 - 00:40:51): Maybe.

Ryan (00:40:51 - 00:40:52): If it keeps rolling.

Kevin (00:40:53 - 00:41:01): I know. I think James Gunn is, is really concerned about confusing audiences and different story timelines and everything. I don’t—

Kevin (00:41:33 - 00:41:37): oh geez, the Creature Commandos.

Ryan (00:41:37 - 00:42:11): Thank you, the Creature Commandos cartoon. And saying this is part connected to the live-action, and you have characters from the live-action appearing in the cartoon and vice versa. That’s the only way that people are gonna be thinking, oh, this— I gotta watch the cartoons and this is connected. If you don’t tell them that, then they’re not gonna obviously think that. Like, it’s— yeah, I don’t know, but it’s been, it’s been great. If you haven’t had— you know, it’s been our geek picks multiple times. Uh, this season though, like, yeah, the death of Superman storyline, the kind of almost like Reign of the Supermen.

Kevin (00:42:11 - 00:42:18): We’ve had Eradicator, we had a radical Superman, we’ve had a Superboy, we had a Superboy, we had a clone.

Ryan (00:42:19 - 00:42:30): that at first when the clones showed up, I thought, oh, this is like— it’s a weird clone Superboy. But it wasn’t. It was their version of Bizarro.

Kevin (00:42:30 - 00:42:32): Yep, yep.

Ryan (00:42:32 - 00:42:44): But not a bad and talking backwards Bizarro, just kind of a messed-up clone. Mm-hmm. And I love how he makes new friends and then ends up getting his own job working at an ice cream stand.

Kevin (00:42:45 - 00:42:46): sometimes that’s all you need to do.

Ryan (00:42:47 - 00:42:47): Yeah.

Kevin (00:42:47 - 00:42:55): Yeah. So very fun. Yeah, no, I really love My Adventures with Superman. It’s a, it’s a great, it’s a great show. Great show.

Ryan (00:42:55 - 00:43:06): If you have access, if you can find it, you can— I watched it through, I guess, Adult Swim or whatever, the Cartoon Network. Where did you use— you bought the season, right?

Kevin (00:43:06 - 00:43:24): Yeah, I used to have access to Adult Swim, but I didn’t all of a sudden. So I actually just bought the whole season on Apple TV and And that’s worked out nice for you. So I kind of wonder what their thinking was in releasing it at midnight on Fridays on Adult Swim.

Ryan (00:43:24 - 00:43:33): Well, it’s on midnight on Saturdays. Saturdays. Yeah. So that’s why, like, I, I, whenever I always forget that it’s a thing and then I saw them on Sunday, I was like, oh yeah, I forgot I can watch that.

Kevin (00:43:45 - 00:43:49): Yeah. And you know, it’s cheaper than subscribing to Adult Swim.

X-Men ‘97 Finale

Kevin (00:43:54 - 00:44:03): Mm-hmm. We also had the season finale this week of X-Men ‘97, which we know is getting more seasons. They have a storyline plotted out through season 6, I think.

Ryan (00:44:03 - 00:44:04): Is that what they’ve said now?

Kevin (00:44:04 - 00:44:04): Yeah.

Ryan (00:44:04 - 00:44:07): It keeps going. That’s good.

Kevin (00:44:07 - 00:44:09): I have really enjoyed this show too.

Ryan (00:44:09 - 00:44:14): I bet, because this is your— like, some of these storylines are your— would have been the prime time that you were reading.

Kevin (00:44:14 - 00:44:28): Yeah, I mean, I think I sort of fell off the X-Men not long after the Jim Lee run, like, yeah. But there’s a lot of stuff in there from my prime X-Men reading days.

Ryan (00:44:28 - 00:44:40): And the season that kind of showed that they’re, they’re not just sticking to that, like, oh, that ‘97 or ’90s era. Yeah, of X-Men. Because they get to the point when they, you know, they’re walking out in the costumes, like the Grant Morrison costumes.

Kevin (00:44:40 - 00:44:48): I love the way they look in the Grant Morrison costumes. Um, yeah, uh, the, the, the finale— can we talk about the finale?

Ryan (00:44:48 - 00:44:49): Yeah, we can talk. I’ve watched it.

Kevin (00:44:49 - 00:45:08): Okay, so, uh, Rogue thinking she’s making a sacrifice to bring Remy back, uh, was heart-wrenching. And then when Nightcrawler makes the deal to sacrifice himself so that Rogue and Remy can have a happy ending— oh yeah, so good.

Ryan (00:45:09 - 00:45:38): when they flash to that and yeah, the beast is— and she’s expecting to just fade away and she’s like, what’s going on? And he’s like— and then with the elf, as she calls him, not being there, and then we see his conversation with the Celestial and he’s like, why do you think that this is worth it? He’s like, I have faith. And that’s been the big thing with him all season, is they have not been afraid to show— I love his costume redesign with the collar and everything that that has been a really nice touch. Mm-hmm.

Kevin (00:45:38 - 00:45:49): I like Scott and Jean knowing that Cable is their son and trying to reach him that way. I think that’s great. I loved Jubilee really coming into her own as a member of X-Force.

Ryan (00:45:49 - 00:45:50): Her costume redesign looked awesome.

Kevin (00:45:50 - 00:46:05): She looks great. I liked— I like X-Factor. I like what they’re doing there with the government team and Lorna, Polaris’s doubts about what she’s doing and whether she’s helping mutants or not.

Ryan (00:46:05 - 00:46:11): And then now it looks like her and possibly her and Bishop, like, they’re, they’re kind of budding relationship.

Kevin (00:46:11 - 00:46:14): Mm-hmm. Because in the comics she was always with Havok, right?

Ryan (00:46:14 - 00:46:15): I think so.

Kevin (00:46:15 - 00:46:17): Yeah, it was Havok quite often.

Ryan (00:46:17 - 00:46:29): And I’m kind of surprised they haven’t played up the, like, the Scott and Havok, like the Cyclops and Havok role yet with their, you know, what the teams are butting heads. It’s like, yeah, I suppose they haven’t really gone there yet, but—

Kevin (00:46:29 - 00:46:30): And that’s—

Ryan (00:46:30 - 00:46:31): I’m sure it’s coming.

Kevin (00:46:31 - 00:46:40): The, the woman who’s in charge of X-Factor, the— oh, Cooper. Yeah, she, she didn’t survive the end, did she? She—

Ryan (00:46:40 - 00:46:47): Oh, I don’t think so. No, it looks pretty much like Mystique has taken her out and taken her over. Yeah, yeah, yeah, little bonus scene.

Kevin (00:46:47 - 00:46:52): So yeah, I’m excited about where this show is going too. Very—

Ryan (00:46:52 - 00:47:04): I really enjoyed the, the Wolverine episode when he went to get his adamantium back. And they introduced the Brood on Earth. Yes, being there. And then we see all the, all the other X experiments.

Kevin (00:47:05 - 00:47:09): And we even got, we even got a cameo from Captain America and Black Widow.

Ryan (00:47:10 - 00:47:10): Yep.

Kevin (00:47:10 - 00:47:15): Because in the comics there was a story about how all 3 of them were around during World War II.

Ryan (00:47:15 - 00:47:25): And I kind of thought with that, because of that bonus scene, because that’s where we saw them, is in that little— that, that something with them was gonna be the next episode.

Kevin (00:47:25 - 00:47:40): I was hoping. The creators of the show have said that we will see more Avengers and non- mutant characters in future seasons. So yeah, so again, X-Men ‘97 is such a fun, fun show.

Ryan (00:47:42 - 00:47:46): Yeah, no, it’s another one. That one’s on Disney Plus. It’s done now. So if you have Disney Plus, you can—

Kevin (00:47:46 - 00:47:47): you got 2 seasons to watch.

Ryan (00:47:47 - 00:47:53): Yeah, stream it all. So from those little adventures, you had an adventure.

Star Trek Las Vegas Trip Report

Kevin (00:47:53 - 00:47:53): I did.

Ryan (00:47:53 - 00:47:56): You want to tell us about your time in Vegas, Kev?

Kevin (00:47:56 - 00:48:35): Yeah, so I flew out to Las Vegas last week to attend STLV. which is the Star Trek Las Vegas convention. They can’t actually use the word Star Trek in their titles because they are not an official— officially licensed convention. But the Creation Company has been doing Star Trek conventions since the beginning, and it was fun. The difference between a Star Trek convention and a fan expo or a big Comic-Con like that is the cap on the number of people who attended. While this convention felt busy, there were only 6,000 people in attendance. But if you’re sitting in a convention room that is set up for 6,000 people, it feels like a lot of people.

Ryan (00:48:35 - 00:48:35): Oh yeah.

Kevin (00:48:35 - 00:49:03): The other difference between a— between a Star Trek— between this convention and other conventions I’ve been to is that the vendor floor was mostly the actors. They’re all around the outside of the room, and even down the center they would have their booths where you could go for autographs and things, and they were very, very approachable. If they didn’t have a line, you could just go up and chat with them. So I talked with the actor who plays Scotty right now on Strange New Worlds.

Ryan (00:49:03 - 00:49:03): Oh, really?

Kevin (00:49:03 - 00:49:51): Yeah, I talked to him. My friend Rhea is— she has a way about her that she doesn’t care. They’re just people. She’ll go and talk to them. Whereas I’m like, I don’t want to bother them. But we got in line not even to buy an autograph or pay for anything, just to say hi. So we talked to Scotty. We talked to Robert O’Reilly, who played Gowron on Next Generation. I got my picture taken with Todd Stashwick, who played Captain Shaw on the last season of Picard. So we met quite a few actors. Ethan Peck, said hello to him. And they walk around the convention floor too, like to get from place to place, there’s no back rooms at this convention center like at Fan Expo. If they’re going somewhere, they’re walking right through the con floor. But people generally, not that they keep their distance, but they respect them.

Ryan (00:49:51 - 00:49:52): They let them move.

Kevin (00:49:52 - 00:50:16): Yeah. Clint Howard was there. from the very first episode of Star Trek back in the ’60s. Shatner is still going strong at 94 doing his panels. I didn’t go to as many big actor panels as I have in the past because, you know, a lot of times they just tell the same stories. But I did go to the Enterprise panel because I’d never seen Scott Bakula at a panel before.

Ryan (00:50:16 - 00:50:17): Oh, geez.

Kevin (00:50:17 - 00:50:40): And so it was fun to hear stories. People are trying to get a Jonathan Archer series off the ground as president of the beginning of the Federation. But having said all that, and it was fun, there were lots of other cool things. The whole convention was sponsored by Magic: The Gathering because there’s a Star Trek Magic: The Gathering set coming out in November. So there were rooms where you could play and learn how to play.

Ryan (00:50:40 - 00:50:41): And you got some cards.

Kevin (00:50:41 - 00:51:02): I did. Everybody got a pack of cards. I was hoping I was able— I would have been able to like trade stuff with people to get all 5. There were 5 decks, 5 different colors. I got the black deck. I just finally opened it when I got home and looked at it, and it’s mostly Borg. cards, which is kind of cool. Yeah, but yeah, I think I might— I don’t know, I might end up buying some Magic: The Gathering cards because I just like the Star Trek connection to it.

Ryan (00:51:02 - 00:51:05): Well, I’ll let you know if we get any at the shop.

Kevin (00:51:05 - 00:51:38): Thank you. So Magic: The Gathering had a huge presence there. There was the Roddenberry Corporation, which while affiliated with Star Trek, of course, is not actually part of Star Trek these days. They had a room set up that had like a museum of costumes and props. And one of the things, the— one of the original Enterprise models— now the huge— there’s a huge model of the Enterprise that’s at the Smithsonian. Okay, this is a smaller model that they use for shots of like the Enterprise like flying across space and stuff.

Ryan (00:51:38 - 00:51:41): And it was like the original series, original series.

Kevin (00:51:42 - 00:51:46): And it was found in a storage room way in the back, and it was gathering dust.

Ryan (00:51:46 - 00:51:46): As they do.

Kevin (00:51:46 - 00:52:02): And they have refurbished it and refreshed it and had it on display there. It was very cool. They also had these cool virtual reality things set up where you could walk around the bridges and actually the whole starships of various ships— the Enterprise, the Voyager, the Defiant.

Ryan (00:52:02 - 00:52:02): That’s cool.

Kevin (00:52:02 - 00:52:43): Pretty cool. Yeah, I went to quite a few non-actor panels, like, but, but there’s this sort of pall hanging over Star Trek right now because we’re in limbo, right? Nobody was excited or could tell us about what was going to happen because everything was done. Everything has been filmed that is being filmed right now, everything has been cancelled. It’s funny because the last convention I went to was during the actors’ strike and they weren’t allowed to talk about Star Trek, which created new fun things for them to have to talk about.

Ryan (00:52:43 - 00:52:43): That’s awesome.

Kevin (00:52:44 - 00:52:46): This time there was nothing—

Ryan (00:52:47 - 00:52:49): there’s nothing Star Trek coming.

Kevin (00:52:49 - 00:53:08): So I went to a couple of panels about the future of the franchise and, oh, it’s bright. Like, we’ve got all kinds of merchandise coming out. There are video games that they’ve got, all new Star Trek video games coming, more, more comics, some more books, but we don’t have any new shows or movies coming.

Ryan (00:53:08 - 00:53:22): I wonder how affected the new stuff, like if they— whatever they keep talking about, whenever the next things will be, how it’s being affected by the, the holding pattern that Warner Brothers and Paramount—

Kevin (00:53:22 - 00:53:23): That’s exactly the problem.

Ryan (00:53:23 - 00:53:27): That’s affecting a bunch of the Warner Brothers franchises.

Kevin (00:53:27 - 00:53:45): Yeah, that’s exactly the problem, is we don’t know what’s gonna happen after the Paramount-Warner merger, if the Paramount-Warner merger happens. The other big problem is Alex Kurtzman’s contract is up this year. It’s been 10 years. that he’s been in charge of Star Trek, and it doesn’t look like they want to renew his contract.

Ryan (00:53:45 - 00:53:46): Okay.

Kevin (00:53:46 - 00:54:21): So we don’t have a new Star Trek showrunner coming. So yeah, while it was fun and it was so good to see my friends and some people I’ve only— who I’ve only ever talked to online, I got to see in person for the first time. There was just this— for me, there was just this weird energy around the convention that we were so happy to be there and to be together, but we didn’t have anything to look forward to. So yeah, it was fun. It was fun. Now, outside the convention, I did some really cool things. I went to the Sphere.

Ryan (00:54:21 - 00:54:24): Oh yes, I saw. I didn’t know you were doing that.

Kevin (00:54:24 - 00:54:47): I didn’t know I was doing it either. It was my last day, and I’m talking to friends at home, my partner Mike and my friend Julie, who likes to go to Las Vegas quite often. And I said, I’m thinking about going to the Sphere, but I’m not sure, it’s so expensive. And they’re like, you’ll regret it if you don’t go, so do it. I paid $122 American for a ticket to go to the Sphere to see The Wizard of Oz.

Ryan (00:54:47 - 00:54:47): Okay.

Kevin (00:54:47 - 00:54:50): The 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.

Ryan (00:54:50 - 00:54:52): The original? Oh, they just played the movie?

Kevin (00:54:52 - 00:56:27): They played the movie. Okay, but I don’t know if you guys have seen the Sphere, but it is this giant, I don’t know, 20-story or more bigger golf ball. Golf ball. It sits on at the end of the Las Vegas Strip, and the whole outside of it is covered in video pixels, and they can make, make it look like anything. Right now, the Backstreet Boys are in residence there. So on nights when the Backstreet Boys are not performing their concerts, they show The Wizard of Oz, the original— like I said, the original 1939 movie. But they’ve taken the movie And when you go inside the Sphere and you go to your seat in the arena, I was like way up in the gods, 6— I had to go up 4 sets of escalators to get to my seat way up at the top. And you are in this giant ball and the entire ceiling is one giant screen. And so they’ve taken The Wizard of Oz And they have exploded it. They’ve used AI and computer graphics to take what is a little square box of a film and make it huge. So, and then they couple that with in-screen, in-theater effects. So when the tornado comes, the tornado fills your field of vision. Like you can see the Kansas wheat fields For forever. You like, you can’t not see it. And then this giant tornado comes up and they turn on the wind machines and they blow leaves all through the theater.

Ryan (00:56:27 - 00:56:28): Oh wow.

Kevin (00:56:28 - 00:56:44): Yeah. And then you get to Oz and it’s all of a sudden color. And I had to hold on at times because the camera would pan down the Yellow Brick Road or through, and you would feel like you were moving because, because your brain can’t comprehend how how much—

Ryan (00:56:44 - 00:56:47): You’re so immersed in it.

Kevin (00:56:47 - 00:57:03): Yeah, exactly. So other things that happened in the theater— where there’s a scene where they find apples growing in a tree and the trees don’t want them to take the apples, but they shake the apple trees and the apples fall out of the trees. Apples fell out of the ceiling. Plush apples.

Ryan (00:57:03 - 00:57:04): Okay, good.

Kevin (00:57:04 - 00:57:32): Yeah, but apples would fall out of the ceiling. Anytime the Wicked Witch of the West showed up, your seat rumbled. ‘Cause she would appear in a puff of smoke and your seat would shake. And the coolest though was when the flying monkeys attacked. They had drones that were flying monkeys. They looked like flying monkeys and they were flying around the theater. So this Sphere experience, super cool. I would do it again, but I wouldn’t do Wizard of Oz again.

Ryan (00:57:32 - 00:57:33): No, of course not. You’ve done that one.

Kevin (00:57:33 - 00:57:36): I hear they’re doing Rocky Horror there next year.

Ryan (00:57:36 - 00:57:37): Oh wow.

Kevin (00:57:37 - 00:57:44): Who knows what’s gonna fall out of the ceiling for that? But, uh, yeah, I’ve also heard rumors that they might do Star Wars there.

Ryan (00:57:44 - 00:57:45): How could you not?

Kevin (00:57:45 - 00:58:09): Next year, 50th anniversary Star Wars. Uh, you know, and if you’re walking down the Strip and the Sphere looks like the Death Star. So, uh, I would go to the Sphere for an experience again. Um, but I wouldn’t go to The Wizard of Oz again, not for that price. The other rumor I’ve heard is that the next, one of the next artists, well, the Eagles might be going in there in residence soon. And then after that, Rush.

Ryan (00:58:09 - 00:58:10): Oh, wow.

Kevin (00:58:10 - 00:58:10): Yeah.

Ryan (00:58:10 - 00:58:13): So they are on tour and they just, they just came from Toronto.

Kevin (00:58:13 - 00:58:49): So the Sphere, very, very cool. Very expensive. I found the cheapest ticket I could find and it was $122 American. A couple other cool experiences I did. I did Flyover Vegas, which is a Soarin’ type ride, a flying theater ride. I found a discount ticket for like $20. It was fun. It was fun. It was a great 9-minute ride. Oh, I did Flying Over the American West, so it was all, you know, cowboys and Grand Canyons and things like that. Very cool. But they— yeah, but they also found a way to spray water on us a lot, which I thought, this is all desert, why are they spraying water?

Ryan (00:58:49 - 00:58:50): It was very fun.

Kevin (00:58:50 - 00:59:31): It was fun. I had it, I had a good time. I’m glad I did that. But the very coolest attraction I did was called Interstellar Arc. It is at Area 15, which is off the Strip. It’s where I know the last time I went, one of the last times I went to Vegas, I think I told you guys about Omega Mart, a cool wacky grocery store that’s a weird art exhibit. So it’s at that venue where they have all kinds of these different attractions. So what Interstellar Ark is, is a virtual reality trip to another planet in another solar system. And so you put a VR headset on, and it’s— when you take the headset off and you look around, you’re in a big empty warehouse that’s got railings set up.

Ryan (00:59:31 - 00:59:32): Yeah.

Kevin (00:59:32 - 01:00:41): When you are in the VR, The rail— you can see the railings too. And it’s a, it’s a 1-hour guided tour of the space station that’s orbiting the planet that you’re going to be colonizing. And it was astounding. Like, I— you could— it was, it was part game too, where you were looking for these energy orbs and, you know, you would reach out and they would come to you. And I was there by myself. If you were there with other people, you’ve got a wrist communicator that lets you talk to the other people in your group. And on your other arm, you’ve got a camera. So I have a series of photos of me inside the virtual reality, but I was holding the— you’re only allowed— it said you could take 30 photos. And so I was holding off on taking pictures and I got to the end and I’d only taken 10 photos. I’m like, damn. But, uh, uh, I found it. I found a discount code for that online too. And I thought, I think I paid $40 to go to it and I thought it was totally worth it. It was so fun. And I’d like to go back with a group. I would do that one again. It ended before you got to the planet. So it’s obviously they’re setting up for a sequel. So like, we’re gonna run this for a couple of years and then—

Ryan (01:00:41 - 01:00:42): oh, now we’re on the planet.

Kevin (01:00:42 - 01:00:58): We’re gonna get to the planet, or maybe the ship that takes you to the planet. I think it’s in 3 stages. So it was the best virtual reality experience I’ve ever done, and I would do it again. So those were the big attractions.

Ryan (01:00:58 - 01:01:00): Sounds like you had a really good time.

Kevin (01:01:00 - 01:01:06): I did, I did. And then I got con crud and had to take days off work because I’ve been sick the past week. week.

Yeah, it’s awesome. I haven’t finished the 3rd episode yet. I watched a few of them before I went into work yesterday, and it is looking like another great season. There are lots of action, a really interesting mystery going on, some political intrigue. You know, it’s Yeah, it’s looking good. If you haven’t watched the other, the other seasons yet, they’re all on Prime. Binge them now, they’re great. Do you have a geek pick now?

Kevin (01:03:39 - 01:04:03): I do. Okay, so I, I mean, I’m still getting the exact title here, but I had a lot of time while I was on airplanes to read comics. I downloaded a bunch of comics from DC and DC Unlimited onto my phone. No, my iPad actually.

Ryan (01:04:03 - 01:04:04): Oh, yep, your iPad.

Kevin (01:04:04 - 01:04:41): And so, I’m not a huge Batman guy really. But I don’t know if you guys know me, I love lists and I love going through things in order. And I found a list of Post-Crisis DC Universe in chronological order of things that happened. And I just read the— an arc from the ’90s of Legends of the Dark Knight. It’s called Prey by Doug Moench and Paul Gulacy. I thought it was really cool. So this— in this storyline, early days of Batman’s career, sort of just post-Batman: Year One.

Ryan (01:04:41 - 01:04:42): Mm-hmm.

Kevin (01:04:42 - 01:05:00): Batman’s coming under scrutiny from the mayor’s office. You know, vigilantes shouldn’t be running rampant in the city. And so the mayor’s office tells Captain James Gordon that he needs to start an anti-vigilante task force, and they assign Dr. Hugo Strange to, to be a psychological—

Ryan (01:05:00 - 01:05:01): Is that the intro? Is this our—

Kevin (01:05:01 - 01:05:20): It’s not an introduction to him, but it’s a, it’s a reintroduction. And so Strange is obsessed with discovering the identity of— yeah, by trying to figure out what his trauma is. He spends most of the comic the series dressed in a Batman costume.

Ryan (01:05:20 - 01:05:21): That’s one dice roll.

Kevin (01:05:21 - 01:06:16): And then the guy, one of the cops that Gordon chooses for his task force, because he’s so anti-vigilante, goes a little cuckoo, and he’s feeding information to Hugo Strange, who tells him he should become a vigilante, and he becomes this like awful sword-wielding, I kill people. But it was just a really great story. So it’s from Legends of the Dark Knight #11 to #15, back in the ‘90s. is collected along with a sort of sequel to it, which I haven’t read yet, in a trade paperback called Batman: Prey. It’s written by Doug Moench and drawn by Paul Gulacy. And like I said, not normally a huge Batman crime guy. I like my superhero comics to be a little more fantastical. But Batman: Prey was one I’m like, I really, really dig this story. So there we go. Awesome.
